Hi!

We're going to take flights in and out of Ulaanbaataar in mid July. We have a week or so to spend in Mongolia, so what do you suggest we'd do? We were thinking having a hotel in UB for the whole time and then making day trips only to destinations nearby. Is this a good idea? Are there such destinations nearby that could be visited on daytrips? We might as well spend a night or two outside of UB, if there are places that MUST be seen and can't be visited on daytrips.

Do you recommend contacting a local tour operator beforehand or is it easy enough to arrange daytrips when we're actually there? Which operators do you recommend - and which ones absolutely not?

Thanks!

I believe there are only 3 worthy day-trip destinations from UB; Terelj, Karakorum, and the big Chenggis monument that was recently put up. The latter is questionable as an all-day excursion or as a worthy stop entirely from what I have heard. UB itself is worth a couple days but gets boring, crowded, and stinky real quick. Mongolia's charm is in its countryside, so I would suggest max 4 nights in UB, and 3 elsewhere. There is a lot from which to choose. With only 3 days left will it be Khovsgol, the Gobi, or somewhere else that catches your fancy?

Consider 3 nights UB, 2 nights Khovsgol, 2 nights Gobi using Eznis Airlines to get around. Flights are about USD160 typically. With such little time, you can't afford not to spend some extra money on quick transportation. That is my suggestion at least.

You would completely miss what makes Mongolia special if you spent the whole time in UB. Part of the fun is staying overnight in nomad gers, so even doing day trips wouldn't give you the best experience.

I'd recommend getting a 4-5 day trip out to the countryside - guest houses such as the Golden Gobi and Khongor run a variety of trips leaving most days which are not too expensive. Google for contact details.

I would recommend you to have a tour around Central Mongolia, instead of doing day trips from UB!

Hi Liiperi !
I took day tour with my friend from Travel Buddies two weeks ago. It was an excellent trip. We drove to Genghis Khan statue first and then Terelj National Park where we visited nomadic family. Also we walked to Meditation center which is located on top of the hill. From my experience, i will definitely recommend you to go out of the city and enjoy beauty of the country. You can take this kind of day tour or few days tour heads to the central Mongolia. Also i heard there is a national park where wild horses are reintroduced.

Have a nice journey !

I would do a couple of day trips to Khustai National park to see the wild horses and Erdene Zuu, but I would then do a 3 or 4 day trip to the Gobi which is Mongolia's most unique landscape - have a look at www.gobitours.com.
