Hello all,
My girlfriend and I will be travelling from UB to Moscow in in May, most likely taking Trans Mongolian Train No.5. We're thinking of taking a 1st class cabin, both for safety and privacy issues. I've been told that on Chinese trains (23, etc) the 1st class or SV cabins are 4 beds just like the 2nd class trains, thus not being worth it. I was wondering if Train no.5 was Russian or Chinese and if it did indeed have 2 bed SV berths.
Thanks.

Are you traveling straight through from UB to Moscow? If not, I doubt that you will be able to get tickets on the #5 train.

The #5 definitely is NOT a Chinese train as it originates in Mongolia. It might be a Mongolian train though. I think it depends upon which day you are traveling as there are 2 trains per week from UB to Moscow. There might be some information here: limited Mongolian Train schedule.

If you are not traveling straight through and intend to stop in Irkutsk, I think there are only a few cars that cross the border.
