Hi all,

I am currently trying to organise a transmongolian trip from Beijing to St Petersburg.

Does anyone have any information about trains from Ulan Bator to Irkutsk. eg what days they leave, how long it takes and most importantly how to book them.

I will be looking to leave mongolia around the 7 of June this year.

Thanks in advance.

The #263 leaves UB daily at 20:10 local time and arrives in Irkutsk three days later at 03:27 Moscow Time.

The #5 leaves UB on Tuesdays and Fridays 1350 local time and arrives in Irkutsk two days later at 09:22 Moscow time.

Try booking through your guesthouse or through Mongolian based travel agencies. There is no way to book directly on the internet.

Mongolian based travel agencies that have been recommended in the past by TT users include Passport Travel, Selena Travel, Legend Tour, Ocean Travel. The last is Beijing based but has an office now in UB. Try searching this branch for their email information.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks you so much for your feed back, it's greatly appreciated.

In relation to the post about booking early. I will arrive in mongolia 2 weeks before I intend on departing. If I was to book a ticket the day I arrive, would that be early enough to avoid overbooking problems?? Or should I try to book one through an agency??

Thanks again

There should not be a problem booking a ticket out of UB if you are flexible about your date of departure, your particular train and class of service.

Also there is a daily bus which leaves UB for Ulan Ude in Russia. From there you can catch a train to Irkutsk. Last summer people who could not get train tickets at the last minute were able to depart by bus.

Hello everbrite (Ruth).........I just bought a ticket on Train #5 from UB to Irkutsk. It departs at 1350 Friday and arrives the NEXT DAY at 1415. The slow train requires two nights onboard. Just thought I could help clarify.

Boji - the fast train takes 30 hours and the slow train 40 hours.

While the train schedule says it arrives at 1415, that is Moscow time. Local time will be 1915. All trains in Russia operate on Moscow time.

Yeah, everbrite, I knew that. My point was that it didn't take two days as mentioned in #1 above.
