hello i was hoping someone could help me out,
what is the likelyhood of being able to get a train from ulaanbaatar to dunhuang in china.
basically i would like to get to dunhuang without having to travel back from beijing or through hohhot, is this even possible?

You can get off the train before getting to Beijing in Datong, then take a train to Lanzhou from there. From Lanzhou, take another train to Dunhuang. You don't really save much time in doing that as the train to Lanzhou originates in Beijing anyway.

The only trains that cross the border to Mongolia are from Beijing or Hohhot. There are NO other options other than what is described above.

Go via Datong or Beijing. It will save you a lot of hassle.

I think that Mongolia_guide is incorrect. I am pretty sure that it is impossible for foreigners to cross at the borders between Mongolia and China in the Western part of the country. These borders are only open to Mongolians and Chinese.
