You have to get it through an agent.

You cannot buy tickets for the train from Beijing to UB at the train station. If you want tickets for the through train then you must use an agency. Try contacting CITS, www.cits.net or Richard Tian of Ocean Travel, whose email is oceantravelcn@yahoo.com.cn or richards@public3.bta.net.cn. Reportedly these companies are quite reliable about obtaining the tickets at a fair price and delivering them during the day to your hostel or hotel in Beijing. Be sure to add them to your address book so that your spam filter does not "Eat" their responses.

The alternatives are to take an overnight bus to the border town of Erlian, cross the border early in the day and buy tickets for the evening or night train from Dzamin Ude to UB. This is cheaper but takes an extra day.

There are occasional reports of people buying a local ticket from Beijing to Erlian and then while on the train buying a supplemental ticket to UB. This works in the slow season but often is not possible in the summer when the cars crossing the border are already booked. In addition it would likely require some ability to communicate your desires in Mandarin Chinese.

There are no daily trains to or across the border. There are 2-3 trains per week from Beijing that cross. Man in Seat 61
