My girlfriend and I will be arriving in Ulaanbaatar by train on Sunday 14th September 2014 at 6:35am.
We are planning to travel to a Ger Camp that day and stay until the morning of Tuesday 16th, before traveling back to Ulaanbaatar.

We have a couple of places in mind but both are looking to charge to pick us up. This would be the easy option but it seems there is a bus service which would be much cheaper. Has anyone got any experience or knowledge of taking this route by bus?

From what we can gather from one of our potential hosts there buses from Peace Avenue to Nalaikh from about 8am, and from Nalaikh there are micro buses to Terelj every two hours (10 am , noon , 14 pm , 16pm).

Please advise if you have used these Buses!

Thanks

hi, 6 times in Mongolia and always with a driver, but if you can visit my website terramongolia.com i think you can find some more information about buses, prices...
but also to be sure of kind of bus, price... you can contact my friends there and ask for, be sure to have an answer and a right answer , so just contact mejet69@yahoo.com
by the fact in case you have nobody waiting for you he can pick you and lodge you in small guest house near downtown 6 euro per day per head. but it's not necessary to rent his guest hosue to have an answer to your question about bus!

you can also think to make a home stay to a nomadic family, and for this I can help if necessary (but also Mejet) or horse trak or camel trek... all depend of your intrets and also how long you want to stay in Mongolia..

hoping this cna helps you

have nice trip in Mongolia

Hi,

We will also be in Mongolia at the end of September (arriving at the 20th). Maybe we could meet up with you (how many people are you?) and join for a tour.

How long will you be staying? Do you know what you will be doing?

There are usually buses, but at the moment there is total chaos regarding the buses in UB. Somehow they wanted to change the system to battle 1 September, which was a very busy day since everything starts again, invested a lot of money, with zero results. Zero would be too good. It backfired. What they did was changing all the routes to short bus routes and people should just change the bus. You could buy a ticket for 500 MNT, then ride all buses with it all day.
What happened was:
People didnt know what lines were going where
People didnt buy tickets, because they didnt know there wasnt a conducter on board, or if they knew about it, they still didnt buy because nobody was controlling anymore.
Everyone waited for any bus to show up, then everyone rushed into one bus. Resulting in very very crammed buses (the thing they wanted to avoid), and a paradise for pickpockets.
Everyone had to change buses 4 or 5 times, resulting in huge delays. combined with the traffic jams, a nightmare.

I think the trial period is over now but I dont know if the direct buses to Nalaikh have been reinstated. Apparently there is a 12.00 and 16.00 bus to Terelj from Naraantuul Hotel, but I waited around 12 and I didnt see it. So the bus system is a bit confusing and you shouldnt bank on it. Its worth a try, though. If you cant get the bus, you can still go by taxi.

@Tsatsatsa Sounds interesting! We are getting a Taxi up to the Ger camp and was planning on taking the bus back. Hopefully we can find out what the current situation is while we are there so we are prepared for getting back to UB.
