Hey There!

It's a long shot, but my partner and I are looking for 2 or 3 other people to travel to western/ north western Mongolia with starting ~ 18h/ 19th/ 20th May. We set off on a 32 day trip with 2 other people we'd met here on throntree 11 days ago, but sadly one of them became very ill and had to fly back to UB today, hence our plans have been scratched and our journey ended. (Get well soon Eddy!)

We can't afford to carry on travelling by ourselves and we're going to take 3 or 4 days to travel back to UB from our location now; Moron, in Khovsgol province, but we don't want this to be the end of our trip!!!!

Have already visited the very north west of Khovsgol province where we trekked for 5 days visiting the Tsartan (Reindeer people) which was amazing, but obviously we won't want to do that again. We are most interested in visiting the north west around Lake Uvs, and the far west in the Tavan Bogd national park where we want to visit the Kazakh nomads and do a 6 day trek through the mountains. Any other ideas or suggestions are of course welcome, we are really very flexible and just want to carry on travelling in this beautiful country with fantastic people!

We're an easy going couple travelling on a small budget, mostly interested in the people and the landscapes. We're not interested in riding horses, camels, visiting museums, temples or staying in tourist camps. We will mostly camp or stay in local gers and try to travel as far off the beaten path as possible. For us the most interesting places are often the parts in between destinations where you find genuine local people and genuine local hospitality - not necessarily the destination itself!

We really need to find some people to share a vehicle with! Anyone interested please message me asap!

Or email me: leedavidmarshall@hotmail.co.uk

Look forward to hearing from anyone! :)

PS. We already know a very reliable and friendly driver who speaks limited english with a Russian mini van which has been costing us $39 a day + fuel through 'Idre's Guesthouse'. Cooking equipment and some warm clothing included. Fuel has been averaging 15L/ 100km )~ $10. Between 4 people we we're paying average $25 a day each including periodically hiring guides and horses to carry our luggage - all inclusive.

Hi BorisTheGreat

Here are a few suggestions in Tavan Bogd national park, - the snow capped peaks are spectacular at this time of year.

Potaniin Glacier - Base camp
You can walk up to base camp alongside the Potanin glacier (14km long glacier), and get to see the snow capped peaks around.
Base camp is where expeditions start thier climb to the highest mountain in Mongolia - Khoiten Uul.

Malchin Mt.
If you are more adventurous and weather permits, climb from base camp to Malchin peak.
This is a non technical climb, and from the top you get to see the glacier, Russia, and Khuiten peak the highest in Mongolia.

Trek to Khoton Nuur (Lake)
A beautiful trek, takes about 5-7 days.

Getting there from Olgii
There is a dirt road of about 180Km from Olgii to where the road ends and the mountains begin.
The closest village to the trekking area is Tsengel, after that all you see are a few Kazakh nomad herders living in Ger's.

Assistance
Ask for assistance at the tourist information in Olgii, ask for Nazguul she manages the office. If the office is closed, call her (her phone number is on the office door). She will arrange for a jeep, guide, give you directions, etc.

Weather
The region is warming up day by day after a bitter frozen winter. In May the temperatures are between 2c at night to 15c during the day. (tonight it is 9c)

Permits
You need a border pass, it is free, and states the route and number of people in your party.
You also need a park permit, costs 3,000MNT.
Both can be obtained through the tourist information.

Second thoughts, scratch that plan. This detraction from our original plan has meant there is no way we can possible afford to carry on so that's the end of our trip here sadly. There's always next time. Maybe 2015. Anyone interested? :)
