I'm attempting exactly this in August. It is possible to drive your own vehicle into China, despite what others may have said in this forum. It is very expensive and difficult to do, but it is not impossible.
I am using a company called NAVO to arrange the entry of my vehicle and I through the Chinese border from Mongolia. Have a look at NAVO's site, send them an email with your vehicle and itinerary. Their requirements are rather strict and laborious, such as providing color photos of your vehicle against a white background, permits, license, etc.

I'll be driving through to Beijing and to Shanghai to put the car on a boat back to the United States. I'm driving around the world this year starting in San Francisco.
