Recent info needed Ulan Bator to Beijing

Hi,

As I understand it the most easy options to get to Beijing are:

1) UB train to Zamyn Uud car across to Erlian local train or sleeper bus to Beijing
2) UB tues/thurs/sat/sun train to Erlian train to Beijing
2) UB thurday train to Beijing
3) UB tues/sat train to Hohhot train or bus to Beijing

I'm a bit confused about all the other place combinations people have done e.g. ub-erlian-hohot-Beijing and combinations of bus/train.

I cannot find much up to date info in the way of times & costs for this direction. Can anyone help who has done one of these options recently. I understand there is an international ticket office in UB to be option 2 from. We want a balance between price & comfort. Hi,
I did it the opposite way. from Beijing to UB.

Beijing - Erlian by night bus. 200 yuan, 10 hours.
Erlian - Zamin Ud - cross the border 4 hours (was packed..)
Zamin Ud - UB by train 15 US dollars , 15 hours.

all together 45-50 US dollars

it was comfortable and cheap for me :)

Hi all,

Just letting you know this is what we did:

2 weeks ago put our name down on the waiting list at the international booking office in UB for the Sunday train. We were told to come back at 4pm the day before.
We got there 4pm on the dot and there was a big queue in front of us but we got called to the front (a bit embarrassing!)

Ticket booked, cost 260,000 tg ( about$197 us) for two people 2nd class direct (cash only). Leaves at 7.15am tomorrow and gets there the day after at around 2pm.

Its low season so not sure if this would be the way to go in high season.

A word of advice, if you do as Gilti explained, 'shop around' for a bit while at the border; as in, ask around for prices before agreeing to anyone.

2) UB tues/thurs/sat/sun train to Erlian train to Beijing

This option doesn't really exist on a daily basis. I don't think there is a train on Tues and Sat from Erlian to Beijing. The train that crosses the border on Tuesday and Saturday is the one which goes to Hohhot. If you take the train on these days instead of getting off at Erlian, you should plan to get off at JININGNAN and take a train from there to Beijing.

Hi! I am looking to leave Ulan Bator on the 3rd and get to Beijing on the 5th. Are the trains to Zamyn uud from UB daily? Would I have to book? How easy is it to then get to Erlian and then a bus? Are those buses daily?

Yes, there are daily trains from UB to Dzamyn Ude. There are also express trains several times a week. I don't know how far in advance you need to book but I would suggest booking on arrival in UB since you know when you want to depart.

Erlian to Beijing there are options. If there are several of you, take a taxi. There are supposed to be daily overnight buses but there is also the possiblity to take a local flight. Or there might even be a train, I can't recall.
