Hi, does anyone have suggestions of places to stay and ways to get around in Olgii? Am traveling solo and want to do some hiking and attend the golden eagle festival late sept -mid October.

The Eagle Festival begins each year on 4 October and lasts for four days.

Expect the temperature to be quite cold. The eagles do not hunt until it is cold and they are hungry. We were told the temperature will be around -10 C.

Do not wear red clothing. The eagles will perceive this as meat and attack you. This happened last year to a Japanese tourist - with unpleasant results.

Contact one of the local tour agents in Olgii to book you a hotel room now. In mid-July when I was in Olgii the local agents were already busy with booking hotel rooms. Expect simple accomodations, even at the best places in town. Be sure to request a room with good heating and hot water.

The festival takes place a couple of km outside of Olgii on a wide plain. Ask the agent you use to arrange transport and a translator if this would make your experience go more smoothly.

Good luck.

I stayed in two different places in Olgii. One was Bastau Hotel, the other was Traveller's Guest House.

I would recommend Traveller's Guest House. The owner speaks English and can help with a lot of things such as permits, and general information on what and how to do everything there is to do in Bayan Olgii. She is listed in the Lonely Planet. Per night ger accommodation has risen to 8000 tugriks, from what is quoted in the LP, but it's a nice place to stay and well worth it, in my opinion.

thanks for this - i have a bright red jacket- so alternatives will be important. And i'll also reach out to a tour guide in the west.

Hey..I am also a solo traveler and would love to get out to Oglii for the eagle festival if you are interested in a travel partner. I will be in UB tomorrow morning (Tuesday the 18th) arriving by train and will stay in the city for a few days to get some things figured out. If you are around let me know if you would like to meet up.
peace, kara
