hi all, I'm doing a long trip through China this year and am thinking of ways to spend the sticky summer months.

would June or July be better to visit Mongolia? The grass should be better in July, but it'll also be wetter (and more overcast so maybe not so good for photography). Nadaam starts on July 11, but I assume outside Ulaan Bataar this isn't really a hassle?

Would 3 weeks be enough for a good look round (excluding the far west), allowing time for homestays, riding trips and watching Nadaam activities? Last year I spent 6 days in Inner Mongolia (China) last year during June (for Naadam).

Also for a single backpacker, are tours easy to arrange in-country, or should you sort them out before arriving? Would anyone recommend a package tour?

Three weeks is plenty of time to get a visit to the Gobi and up north but as you noted not the far west.

Tours can be arranged in country if you are flexible.

June is the best season and you can see the most beautiful part of Monglia...very very different.

In case of the tours, you can buy it while you are in Ulaanbaatar at the reasonable price.

3 weeks is enough tme, especially if you can fly to/from the Gobi or Khuvsgul.
This saves a lot of bouncy jeep time.
There is not much rain in June or July - probably less in July.
For central sights you could do it yourself, but for the Gobi and Khuvsgul I'd recomend a tour company. For the Gobi you could look at www.gobitours.com

June and July - much of a muchness.

As you mentioned Naadam is in July - this is a really unique event in UB as well as the countryside. Different experiences. This obviously brings the tourists in, so the country will also be as busy as it ever gets, so depends on what you want to see.

3 weeks is enough for a decent look around - just about enough to get to Hovsgol and the Gobi in one trip (I'd recommend going overland vs flying if you are OK travelling offroad), or you could rush a trip to the West if you are determined. Both June and July are busy months - I'd recommend booking in advance to ensure you get the trip you want and don't waste time sorting out logistics when you could be exploring the amazing countryside.

Depending on your budget, I recommend the Khongor Guesthouse khongor@mongol.net http://get.to/khongor and Gans kbgans@yahoo.com

Happy travels!

Q: would June or July be better to visit Mongolia?
A: Yes.

Q: Would 3 weeks be enough for a good look round?
A: I "looked around" for 88 days last year, and it wasn't enough. I'm going back next week.
