Hi,

I am really confused about Mongolia tourist visa. Since last two weeks I have been in touch with few mongolia based tour operators and getting variable informations from them about visa.

Some say it can be obtained after reaching UlaanBaatar int'l airport, some say this service has been stopped. Some say 'Invitation letter' NOT required for stay for less than 30 days. Others say it is required.

I have got e-mail from Mongolian consul in Mumbai stating only Mongolian Embassy in New Delhi, India issues visa to Indians in India after submitting application form, photos, visa fee (US $ 50 or Indian Rs. 2000). Now this information is not what I got at verious websites. Just for curiosity I checked Australia based Mongolian embassy website but still no clear answer.

I am having Indian passport. Already booked international flights @ Mongolia.

If anyone has gone thr' this recently then latest information is requested.

Thanx

Jayanraj

My second-hand, old (but I think still not out-dated) info is that in practice, you can get a visa on arrival at the airport. HOWEVER: the most important thing is not what is possible in practice, but what the person at the airport counter in your home country thinks. Because if you have no visa for your destination, the airline won't let you onboard.

What the people at the airport see in their computers is probably that you can get a visa on arrival only if there is no Mongolian embassy in your home country. Since your country apparently has a Mongolian embassy, I think you really need to get the visa before your departure. The only exemption would be if you already had a not-too-old visa issued at Buyant-Ukhaa in your passport AND are willing to argue with the airport personnel.

Not sure about the invitation letter.

As #1 notes, the airlines may refuse you permission to board if you don't have a visa. This is their right because if you are refused entry then they must transport you back. Why not call the airlines and ask them?

I can't recall about Mongolia, but some countries only permit a visa at the airport if there is no embassy for that country in the country of your passport or official residence. Why not call or write the Mongolian embassy in New Delhi?

Is there a particular reason that you don't apply for the visa in India before departure?

Most reports on this forum indicate that people obtain the visa prior to arrival, probably because they are traveling overland from Russia or China.

Hi ruth,

I guess the reason for enquiring about visa on arrival is that , India is a big country and if a person is staying in the south, east or west of India and has to go to all the way to Delhi (north of india ) for the visa process , its not cheap and the process can be time taking as well.

there are some embassies in mumbai , chennai and bangalore ,etc , but not for all countries, delhi being the capital has the most of them.

the guy(jayrajan) here clearly says that called up the mumbai consul, but they dont issue the visa and its only the delhi one does, if he takes the flight to delhi from mumbai and stays there to get visa , the amount he spends to do that, probably would cover most or atleast half of his flight money to mongolia,,,

if he takes a train or bus, atleast i guess 20-24 hr journey one way.....

one thing i would like to know, if there is any possiblitly of applying the visa online for mongolia and getting a print visa??, i believe some countries do that and when you arrive at the airport, they see that and stamp your passport ........

I have never heard of online visas for Mongolia.

It happens in many countries that the only place to get a visa is the capitol. If this is the case, then one uses a courier service or a visa service to obtain the visa. Only certain countries require a face to face interview and I am pretty sure that Mongolia isn't one of them.

yeh, i do agree, the courier or speed post service can be used !! and one can just call the embassy in the capital and find out if they do so via postal service...

Hi to all of you,

I regret to apply so late because I was on a tour .... as usual....

I am flying to New Delhi on 05 th May, 2010. Same day I will visit Mongolian Embassy and apply. Hope to get my tourist visa within 10 days or so. I have time upto 30 th May only.

Additionally after that I am going to apply for two Russian transit visas too since I will be flying to / from Mongolia thr' SVO international airport, Moscow.

Online visa application process is NOT applicable for Mongolia. I got this information after surfing internet.

Will keep updating my progress ...

Assuming that both flights are on Aeroflot at the same airport, you don't need Russian transit visas unless you plan to leave the airport.

Mongolian visa is usually issued within 5 business days or less.
