Hello,

I was planning on going to Mongolia in late November to early December and there do not seem to be any tours around. Travellers also seems to onlybe planning things in Julyish.
I was wondering if anyone has been to Mongolia in Nov/Dec, if I am crazy to do it because it's too cold or there's no one around (ie like in Europe many locals close down shops in summer to go on their holidays). I am planing to go to Lake Khovsgul and the Altia mountains as well as the usual UB and Gobi.
I will be making my own way around also as tours seem too bloody expensive if I can manage it for about $40/day.
Any help is much appreciated!

Hi Roma

Q: and there do not seem to be any tours around
A: yes, not many tours and not many tourists around during November December.

Q: if anyone has been to Mongolia in Nov/Dec
A: Yes some adventures people go to Mongolia during the winter and get to see a very different Mongolia
see this photo album from a few weeks ago, visiting frozen Mongolia. The photos are from Khuvsgol, Altai, and Gobi, a tour well organized by Mongolian Ways .

Q: I will be making my own way around
A: that is possible see public transportation

Q: if I am crazy to do it because it's too cold
A: Yes it is way below freezing, you should be properly dressed, see the climate charts .

Have a warm hospitality in a frozen country.

Contact Ger to Ger, they apparently offer a few winter tours between November and May

Thanks very much. I found a book which told me mongolia is a warm -6 to low -20 in November so i'm going to try go in October where it is +6 to -8 (i'll take what I can get). I think october is just in the shoulder season so hopefully few more tours going. I might do a short tour to start and then explore if I feel brave enough.
Those pictures were great, not to mention terrifying!
And good idea about contacting ger to ger, hopefully a few locals can show me a few things, better brush up on my mongolian then.

Tours will cost more than this assuming that you can find enough other people to get the price down even this low.

In addition to the temperature, you need to take into consideration the wind chill factor.

Mongolia is beautiful in winter but there aren't so many tourists. There are still quite a few expats around though and if you hit the right places - cafe amsterdam etc you might find people. $40 a day is pretty low for tours in Mongolia - even if you have a group of 6 people in a minivan.
Also you can call the tour companies and see what tours they have going in the time you are going to be there and see if they have any spaces for you to join - this will help bring the cost down.
Its not too cold as long as you have the right gear - dont travel without a sleeping bag, candle and good supplies of food and water. Make sure you have plenty of good quality thermals and good outer gear. Its such an amazing country in winter, if you are adventurous enough to try it!
