Hi! A friend and I are looking to travel for 3 weeks in Mongolia. However we are also visiting quite a few other countries (gap year thing) and the cheapest way we can do it is by doing Mongolia in April. From what i gather its still winter and extremely cold at this point (beginning april) and although the cold doesnt bother us too much, i just want to make sure that there will be enough for us to do at this point. can we still visit the national parks/pony trek/get around as in summer?
Any info would be much appreciated!

National Parks don't close for winter but trekking my be pretty miserable in April given temperatures, winter and possible snow on the ground in places. Check with stepperiders.com regarding horse trekking at that time of year. Not sure that there is adequate ground cover to feed the animals.
Biggest problem with traveling off season is finding others to put together a group to go places like Lake Khovsgul or the Gobi Desert.

Hi,Lake Khovsgol is also nice part of the tour.I also been in Gobi.I used Bonda Lake Tours offers.
We were happy with all arrangements. You can find them on www.mongolianaccommodation.com
They have guest house in Khovsgol also organizing some trips to Cobi from Ulaanbaatar any time of the year
best wishes
Andy

you can do it but you ll pay more as it will be hard to find partners to share transportation/excursion. Don t hesitate to visit all guesthouses to find other travellers
Itchy,
I am in much the same position as yourself; I'll be in Mongolia from 27 April to 06 May.
I've been in touch with a couple of companies with regard to horse trekking at that time of year and the general consensus seems to be that, as the horses will still be weak so soon after winter, only very short treks are possible.
HorseTrails.mn in Harhorin seem like a good bet as their tours are aimed at the independent traveller / backpacker market. I've emailed them and they think it may be possible to get out on horseback for a couple of nights in late April or very early May. Prices start at just under 50 Euros per day for a solo traveller and go down as numbers go up.
If you're still around at the end of April, give me a shout if you'd like to link up!

Hi all, looks like it is indeed a tough month in April to vist Mongolia. I am also planning a visit to Mongolia first week April, train up from Beijing to Ulaanbatar. Anyone who might possibly be there during this time- perhaps we can fix a tour together to lower down the cost of travel. I am currently doing my research on the tour agencies. Give me a shout if you are too looking for a trip out during this time. Linda
