I live in Sydney Australia and would like a map of Khovd Altai, Mongolia since this is where I will be in June this year. I am volunteering on an archaeological project which will focus on a Xiongnu (third B.C. – first A.D.) cemetery in the high mountains and investigating several preceding Bronze Age monuments within the vicinity of the Tsenkher River. Any recommendations for some maps of this area that I can buy BEFORE I get to Ulaanbaatar?

Hi
There is a Russian website with maps of most of the world. They have the Altai region covered with 1:100k, 1:200k, 1:500k and 1:1,000,000 maps. The text is in Cyrillic but even if you don't know it yet with a little practice you'll get the hang of it. By the way - these are the same maps you'll find in shops in UB (1:500k and maybe 1:100k).
The website is also mostly in Russian but after some time with it you will find your way around.

The 1:500k map of the area:

If i remember correctly, in full size each map covers about 2 and another 2 halves A3 pages. Probably in a printing shop you can get it in one piece.
If you need help with navigating around the website let me know.
Good luck and happy excavations
