Anyone knows whether the Chinese-Mongolian border is closed both ways? I am thinking of traveling from Urumchi to Ulan-Bator by bus or car in September. Is 2 weeks a realistic period of time for that?

Not sure what you mean. There is only one international border between China and Mongolia. It has been open for years. It is a road and rail crossing from Erlian (Erenhot) to Dzamyn Uud.

It is possible to travel from Urumqi to UB but there are no buses from the Chinese Mongolian border to UB. There are trains. A daily overnight passenger train from the border to UB and twice a week an express train from Hohhot to UB.

Urumqi to Lanzhou by train is about 21 hours by train.
Lanzhou to Hohhot by train is about 17 hours
Hohhot to Erlian (the border) by train is about 8 hours.
Erlian to UB by train is about 14 hours or you can cross the border and take the train which takes about 12 hours if you take the express or more if you take the local train.

Hi Philippe

The border is now open.
It operates all year round.
There is no problem crossing this border.

See more details on the Bulgan border crossing page.
