Can anyone recommend the cheapest airline to fly direct to UB from London- Gatwick if poss. or Heathrow ? we hope to fly out end of May for a very short trip as its half term time. Many thanks
Hi
Unfortunately there are no direct flights from London to UB.
MIAT the Mongolian airlines are negotiating a flight route from Gatwick to UB.
Your options are to fly to Berlin or Moscow.
In summer 2010 MIAT will fly from Berlin and Moscow twice a week.
MIAT summer timetable will be published during March 2010.
Since September 2009 you can purchase online MIAT e-tickets.

There are only 4 airlines that fly to Ulan Bator and it is extremely unlikely that it will be cheap.
One is Korean Air which probably doesn't make sense since you would likely have to fly to Seoul or Tokyo to make the connection to UB.
Two is Air China. This might make sense if you can find a cheap flight to go from London to Beijing and then connect to Air China but they are well known for canceling flights to UB so I might be reluctant to consider them given the short nature of your time.
That leaves the two companies mentioned above, MIAT from Berlin or Aeroflot from Moscow.
Which to take will depend upon multiple factors such as what day of the week you are departing and returning, how you will get to the gateway city (Berlin or Moscow), what the costs are when you want to travel. Also consider that if you are passing through Moscow and the connections aren't great, you would need a transit visa to leave the airport.
Realistically this isn't going to be cheap and if you are pressed for time and limited in finances I would strongly suggest against it. Particularly because once in Mongolia, you will discover that outside of UB travel becomes quite expensive unless you take public transport and given your time limitations that is probably not recommended. Figure 45+ USD per person per day for a jeep tour to the Gobi desert or Lake Khovsgul.
