Hey
I'm planning to drive to Mongolia entering from Russia at the Tashanta border. Is it possible to purchase vehicle insurance at the border and what other documentation will i need for the car. Also about the car at the end of the trip. Is it possible to sell the car and if not, apart from driving it back are there any other methods of getting rid of the car and flying home. Thanks for any possible help

Hi
The regulations regarding cars are supposed to change soon.
So you better check with your Mongolian embassy before you leave.
Answering your questions:
Q: entering from Russia at the Tashanta
A: You can cross with your car at the Russian/Tashanta Mongolia/Tsagaan-Nuur border crossing in west Mongolia.
Q: Is it possible to purchase vehicle insurance at the border
A: There are no insurance company offices at the border
If the regulations are enforced at the border you will pay for third party insurance only. That does not cover any damages to your vehicle. Your health insurance you purchase at home should cover any injuries including injuries from car accidents.
Q: Is it possible to sell the car
A1: Very important question. You must declare at the border that you do not intend to take your car out of the country.
This will save you the need to arrange a "Carnet de Passage" which is like a passport for your car, and save you the need to leave a very high deposit to make sure you take your car out.
A2: You can not leave an old car in Mongolia (older that 2001 model). This is a fairly new regulation that came out after the Mongol Rally adventure left many old useless cars in Mongolia.
A3: Leave plenty of time to sell your car in UB, you can also donate your car.
A4: On exit, you will need to show proper papers proving you sold the car, and payed all the relevant taxes. Better sell to a car dealer in UB who will arrange all the documents for you.
A5: When you apply for your Mongolian Visa, give them full details of your vehicle and ask them to add a letter stating that you intend to leave your car in Mongolia.
Happy Tsagaan Sar (Mongolian festival today 14 February)
Have a safe trip
