Hi.

My friend and I would like to do horse riding trip from the Ögii Nuur to the Orkhon waterfall (via Karakorum) in May/June 2010.

A tour operator in Ulaanbaatar told us about a local horse breeder at Ögii Nuur; a proper riding horse would be 300 USD there he said.

Is that a good price for a Mongolian horse? Renting a horse is probably not an option because we are not sure if we have enough time to travel back to the lake at the end of our trip.

Thanks a lot!

PS: Do you know where I can get cheep Russian saddles in Ulaanbaatar?

Hi Khan,
Now, why would you have to buy a horse to ride from Oggii Lake to Orkhon Waterfall while distance is roughly 200 km in total. You could always rent & arrange to have someone (owners) to come and get the horses at the end of the trip. Cause, when we did some riding in the east (Khentii), we averaged 25 - 30 km a day. And some of us were pretty much beginners at the time.

Do you know what they usually charge for renting a horse for let's say three weeks? The only contact I have is that tour operator in Ulan Bator. And he told me horse owners won't lend their horses for a trip like that...

Hi khan
300$ is meduim price for Mongolian horse and approximately starts from 200$-400$ but if you r good at negatioting ask to cut price as well they would accept. Even 200$ u can get pretty good horse in Ugii. But keep in your mind around the Ugii Lake most of horses are quite wild not friendly with tourists because not many tourists do horsetrekking there. Though horses like that they are enough strong and also ask from the selling people "russian saddle", mongolian saddle is not appropriate for tourists. Renting horses is approximately 10.000-15.000 mongolian tugrik /8-13US$/ per day per horse from the local people and you can ask that one of family member travel with us to Orkhon waterfall as a horsetrekking guide definitely they know their horses and in order to do you need offer him 10.000-15.000 per day for guiding. I think they will accept it and try to negotiate with them. Ohterwise, what if will you do with horses after finished horsetrek? Sell it or your tour operator make arrangement for it?

If you would like to rent horses, then you do not need to get back to the family where you hired those horses. You can have some guys from the family and they will take care of those horses back to their family.
300USD is quite reasonable price for buying horses in Mongolia.
Enjoy

Hi,

A good travel agency is located in Karakorum, they organise horsetrips all around the area with local guides. Prices are not too much expensive compared to UB agencies prices. They also sell horses or help you to meet nomadic families to buy horses. Their website is : www.horsetrails.mn. The website is in french and english, prices are in euros.
