To celbrate the sunshine, I went to Ueno park today for the first time in what
must have been quite a while. I was very surprised to see the homeless village
in the NW corner of the park has been dismantled and there is relatively long
green grass growing where the homeless tents used to be.

I hadn't heard anything about this in the news.

The Osaka efforts to dislodge homeless people from the park near the castle
received a lot of coverage. I don't think Ueno…
I am thinking about travelling to Japan with my young 16month old baby boy. Has anyone done this and if so should it be something I should even be considering.....!
Dear All,
I am looking for general advice on camping in Japan - does it happen much (I have a map of campsites, thanks to a thorntree poster)... and how realistic is it for a non-japanese speaker (of any repute) to get to and from these places?
And for specific advice - if anyone has camped, or knows about it, where are the most accessible or most useful places to go - ie. en route from major cities or interesting places to get involved in, or a good stopover out of the way somewhere cool.

One of my students is about to go to Japan from France for two weeks. She's got a JR pass for a week & I've given her an outline itinerary; essentially:
NARITA - SHINJUKU - MATSUMOTO
MATSUMOTO - TOMARI (Toyama-ken)
(does the little line from Matsumoto to Itoigawa still run? It was washed out a few years ago - but it was the loveliest route!)
TOMARI - KANAZAWA
KANAZAWA - HIROSHIMA
(need help with rail connections here)
HIROSHIMA - MATSUYAMA
(need help with connections south on Shikoku to the valley…
If you are planning to go to Yakushima island in Japan,I strongly recommend not to chose your accomodation called "Chinryuan".
They are so crazy about gaining more money as much as they can get!
If you stay there,on the last day of your stay, you will be surprised the extra charge they requre you!
It will be obviously over charged! Even if you ask them to show the breakdown of the extra charge, they just say they haven't got time to make such a thing! That's their excuse to make more money! so mean…
I am traveling to Japan and China with my husband and 4 kids (ages: 5,11,14,17) in August.
I plan to go to Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto while in Japan. Does anyone have any suggestions on things we should see in these places while visiting?
Thank you
I've been thinking about biking Japan for about a year now. I'm thinking it would be a great experience, but so far I don't know anyone who has done this. I want to know how safe is it, for a girl (23 y.o) to go about this, and if it is even possible. I don't know japanese so I realize communication would be a big problem, since I would have to go through small towns...
Is there anyone who has done this? Knows how to go about it?
The Tokyo rail system has me totally overwhelmed, I admit, so I'm looking for suggestions on reasonably-priced, clean, decent places to stay, was thinking that near Shinjuku or Shibuya stations, or near Harajuku or Ginsa, might be interesting areas to stay in, but I'm open to suggestions.
I only have an evening, a full day, then most of a second day in Tokyo, so my requirements are:
- somewhat easy to find my way there from Narita airport;
- within easy walking distance of a train station…

Im planning on going to Japan in December. Do the sand baths in Ibusuki still operate?
