What is your favourite film set in Japan. My boyfriend and I are moving there next year. We don't know too much about the place right now so thought I would get him a good film to watch.
Genre is not important (except rom coms) but anything that gives you a feel of the place.
Cheers,
Linda

at your risk: Tokyo Decadence (or Topazu)...
I would take a japanese movie, not an american one to get a feel of the place.

You Only Live Twice

Ha! #2, you are right! In that case, ANY film by Itami Juzo! He is (was) a fantastic director! Such irony, such sarcasm in his films! I just saw the one about the actor who was terminally ill with cancer(forget the title- "Daibyounin" or something like that) and it was hilarious!

A couple of scenes in Mr. Baseball.
A lot of scenery from Poppoya.
A couple of scenes from The Yakuza.
A moment or two from Sayonara.
Not much else really has the feel of the place. Haven't seen The Last Samurai or Lost in Translation.
If you want the feel of a foreigner in the place, watch Terminal. What are you hoping to get out of a movie anyway? If you watch an older one (Seven Samurai, Kagemusha, Ran), you are only looking at a Japanese director's view of ancient Japan. If you watch a western movie about Japan, you are mostly going to get stereotypes. If you can understand Japanese or find a Japanese movie with English subtitles, get a Japanese made contemporary movie. (Skip Swing Girls, though. And, Water Boys.)
