We will be in Japan for a quick 6 day trip and visiting Tokyo, Kyoto and Mt. fuji. I have heard that Japan has some of the best cosmetics and a booming industry. What are some of must have cosmetics for someone living in the USA to try or come back with?

Not sure what you mean by cosmetics. If you’re talking make up, Shiseido is the obvious Japanese brand. It’s available both department store as well as drugstore. Obviously drugstore option will be cheaper. Kose is another popular brand. Unless you’re Asian, the colors available for foundations will be too yellow for your skin. As an American living in Japan, I can tell you that my make up bag is stocked with MAC, Lancôme and L’Oréal. To me there’s nothing particularly special about Japanese cosmetics.

Hey,

There are so many brands to choose from. Heroine do amazing mascaras, Tony Moly have really cute packaging, lots of sheet masks etc. Have a look on Reddit's 'Asian beauty' subreddit and you'll be able to research what might be best.
