ok. so i wanted to stay in takayama some nights. and i've been looking at cheap places to stay. i've found Takayama tenshoji YH, but they have a curfew as early as 9 pm. and i'm not sure that's very good. so here's my Qs:
¤ could anyone recomend any other good places to stay??
¤ is there anything to do in Takayama after 9 pm? i mean, will i get awefully sorry staying at a place with a curfew at 9?
¤ how far off from the city centre is Tenshoji YH really?

Red Hill is the best place for a drink in town, or Bagus the reggae bar. Both very small but very sociable. I would guess that foreigners will outnumber locals in Red Hill (popular haunt for the teaching community). I have been to Takayama many times and always stay at Asunaro. It is probably more than you're looking to pay (about 12,000 yen a night, but that includes excellent dinner and breakfast), but it is a beautiful place and probably worth splashing out if you're travelling just once in Japan. Sosuke is another traditional, but cheaper option, than Asunaro.

I'd recommend staying at the Rickshaw Inn http://www.rickshawinn.com/. The cost is very reasonable, and the location is very convenient - close to the train station and the sightseeing attractions in central Takayama.
Solon, the Rickshaw inn looks wonderful. What activities would you suggest for a fit couple of retirees who had 2 nights and 3 days in Takayama?I like temples and gardens, my husband likes hikes and bikes? Thinking of going early April, but won't hang around for the festival.

In addition to the old buildings in central Takayama, there's a really nice temple walk (mentioned in the LP guide and well-signposted along the route) that ends in a park with nice views overlooking the city. If you have the time, use one of the days to take the bus to Shirakawa-go/Ogimachi, and check out the old farmhouses there (a UNESCO World Heritage Site).
