Planning a trip to Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Can anyone give me some recommendations on what area in Tokyo to stay and names of hostels/hotels to stay in. We are looking to spend up to $60/night and looking for a place that is clean, comfortable and fun and where we can meet other people/travelers. We also expect to be going out at night so a place that doesn't mind what time we stumble in. Basically the best combination of price/accommodation/atmosphere.

Can you give me recommendations for Kyoto and Osaka too?

Thanks!

hmmm... $60 is a bit tight. particularly if you want to be going out at night in the middle of town.

you could consider a capsule hotel. cheap. interesting.

in shinjuku:
green plaza
kuyakusho-mae capsule

in shibuya:
astro inn
capsule land

download my guide for more info on tokyo. cheers...

if its 60 Australian Dollars (or Thorn Tree World dollars???) per person then it should be a problem. Also how many people is "we"? single room double room or dorm?

For a lot less than A$60 there are a number of options listed on maujudi.com (use the links on the left) for each of the cities you mention

Hey,

I stayed at Kimi Ryokin in Ikibukoru (don't think I spelt either of the last two words correctly but you'll figure it out... the Kimi is definately right).

It's really good. Ikibukoru (again, my spelling) is on the JR line which is the best line to stay on for getting around Tokyo.

It's really clean, cheap. I am going back in June and have alrady booked for here at about 70 bucks a night for me and my girlfriend. bear in mind most places like this shut their doors between 11pm and 4am (even if you are a guest you can't get in).

From memory it was started by a japanese guy who had travelled alot and was dissapointed at the lack of cheap accomodation in Tokyo.

We are not limited to $60 USD/night. There are three of us. We're really not looking to stay in a capsule but in a hostel, hotel or ryokan. How much should we be expecting to pay? From what I read on LP and other websites it seems like $60-$75 usd is around the price rooms go for. We are not on a tight budget but would not like to spend more than we have to on accommodation. Also, do we have to worry about places closing their doors early so we can't get back in until morning?

I will check out your recommendations. If you guys think of anything else please let me know!

Cheers!

ooops, I missed out a NOT in #4 which completely changed what I meant to say. Which was that if you are looking at US$60 per person then that shouldn't be a problem. In fact you should be able to get something quite nice.

To put things in perspective, an "average" price per person in a hostel is around 3000yen (all across Japan)

one thing to keep in mind, most hotels in japan charge PER PERSON. not for the room. so if there are three of you staying in one room you will be charged $180.

not sure if this is the case for hostels...
