Cheap and cheerful is fine for us. but after reading a bit of the LP and asking around, I still have little idea where and what to aim for in Tokyo. I have found a ryokan which sounds nice, but if anyone has any pointers on (1) which area to stay in, and (2) where might not have a curfew, I would be very grateful to hear from you. It's our first time in Japan (tho have been to lots of other places nearby). Would like to see be in a buzzing area if possible, with good access to all the must-sees for a first visit.
Thanks!!

I usually recommend Sawanoya Ryokan, a 10-minute walk in a pleasant neighborhood from Ueno subway station. Restaurant/bar and post office are nearby. Staff is very nice, place is clean, and price was reasonable. Google it.
Curfews are another story. Do you plan to be out all night or something?

K's house?
http://kshouse.jp/tokyo-e/index.html

i have stayed at Ks house Kyoto. it was very nice and clean. staff were helpful too.
so should be the same with the one in tokyo.
No curfew!
just one train ride to some of the main attractions like:
Tsukiji (fishmarket), Shinjuku (neon lit streets), asakusa and also to Narita Airport!
have a great time!

Hey there,
I've met a few Japanese on my travels, and there advice was to stay in Manga Comic Cafes, and things of that ilk. Aparently it's about US$7 a night, which wold be sweet (i'm heading to Tokyo in a few days, so am looking for similar things).
If not, in all seriousness, another guy I met reccommended (and had a friend who also did this) to stay in Temples, if you can communicate that you want one night - and help clean or wash something in the morning - and keep moving. Might be interesting (and cheap) for an opvernight stay somewhere. I'll try to feel this out too.
Good Luck on your Mission.
I'll try my best too. YP
