I fly into Shizuoka airport and intend to go straight to the Izu Peninsula as there doesn't seem to much to see in Shizuoka city.

I'm wondering where would make a good base that is convenient for exploring the peninsula?
Atami seems a bit far up and little to see. I'm considering Ito as an option. I'm also happy to spend 2 nights at one place and then 3 at another if it makes more sense and cuts travel costs. I'll be using local buses/trains only.

I have about 5 full days there and am interested in chilling out, good food, experiencing authentic Japan rather that touristy things, some nice hikes, nature, onsen, meditation and to experience the spiritual side of Japan by way of zen and some shrines/temples. This will be my third trip to Japan. Any suggestions on the "must see/dos" would be appreciated. Especially the best onsen and accommodation. I'm on a budget but am willing to spluge a little if I find a nice ryoken.

Also is 5 days a little long to spend there? I'll be going up to Fujikawaguchiko after.
