Hello all,

I posted a thread a couple of days ago about going from Tokyo to Hokkaido using a Seishun 18 Kippu.. thinking about it, it seems too straining. Here is another shot at it.

Is it possible to go from Tokyo to Matsumoto, to Takayama, to Kanazawa and then back to Tokyo in 6 days? I have 8 days in Japan so I am allocating 6 days for this. I will be using a Seishun 18 Kippu, so I will be taking local trains. Is there a train connection between Matsumoto and Takayama? Also, is there a connection from Takayama to Kanazawa? If anyone has been to any of these places, how was it? Any input is highly appreciated. Thanks!

You can work out trains easily on www.hyperdia.com or www.jorudan.com

I'm amazed that you'd come all the way to Japan to sit on trains.
I guess courses for horses, or is it horses for courses.
I used to live in Japan (Yokohama) and am a Japanese citizen, so plenty more opportunity to go back :-D

I think the best route from Matsumoto to Takayama is a 3-step one:
train
bus (which stops at some mountain resort)
bus

The train station staff at Matsumoto were very accommodating to write all of the necessary info for me so I could catch everything.

You're going to spend half a day getting from Tokyo to Matsumoto, from Matsumoto to Takayama, and from Kanazawa back to Tokyo. Don't know what Tokyo Girl figures is any faster way to see those sights, but I've done pretty much what you outlined. I spent my time well on trains writing postcards and reading material for the next stop. Never wasted a moment.

Hey Glenski,

Is it possible to go from Matsumoto to Takayama via train only? I used Jorudan and it seems I can transfer to Takayama Line along the line? Also, I think I'll just stay in Matsumoto and Takayama, not going any further. How do you suggest I should divide up my time? Let me know, thanks!
