I will be traveling with my 12-year-old son and this is our tentative itinerary. We will get a JR pass for the last 7 days of the trip. I'm crazy about onsen.
Tokyo 3 nights
Yudanaka Onsen, Nagano 2 nights
Kyoto, 2 nights
Ito Onsen, 2 nights

If you love onsen and have calculated that your route will make the JR Pass worthwhile, then I see nothing wrong with it.

certainly wouldnt be my choice.

I guess the JR pass might pay off. If you are taking the Shinkansen to Nagano it might.

but if you really like onsen, this might be for you.
