My friend is stopping in Japan overnight as we are heading to Bangkok the next day. As he is in transit is there anything special he has to do at the airport to leave for the night or as a 90 day westerner, does he just exit customs as usual fo a tourist?

If he is eligible for the 90 day visitor's permit then he just goes through Immigration as usual, gets the stamp in his passport, and the same the next day. Nothing speacial is required for a one night stay.
