I would like to experience at least one Onsen there if possible. Can anyone here recommend any near the following areas:

Tokyo
Kyoto
Okayama
Sendai
Takayama

yes I know Hakome is one near Tokyo and I am thinking about it, but if other options are available I would like to know about them.

Thank you.

There are actually several onsen in Tokyo itself. The LP book can help you.

There is an onsen that you can find by walking up the street that is to the east of the zoo. It parallels the boundary of the zoo. Keep walking till you pass a hotel then you need to make a left down a side street. You can ask when you get to the hotel as the onsen is famous.

How about a sento ? Almost as good.

From the Nippori Station on the Yamanote Line exit the south exit and walk up the hill past the Suzuki Ryokan. Go through the cemetary till you get to a street with traffic lights on them. Cross the street and make a left.

Keep walking till you pass the police box (noted with it's red light out front.) about 50 feet past that look for the place with the little wooden lockers on your left. You can buy a towel and soap there. The entire cost will be 600 yen.

enjoy !

In Toshimaen, there is another one in Tokyo. It's called Garden Spa (Niwa yu'' in Japanese).

Easy to reach from the Seibu-Ikebukuro line or the Oedo subway line.

Thank you Optimistik-San. Since I am spending my last days in Sendai before I leave either one of these would be perfect to wash any stress out of me before I head back to Tokyo and my flight out.

If you have some time around Takayama, I would strongly recommend to explore some of the onsen you find in the prefecture of Gifu. This is one of the best place in Japan to soak in an outside bath. The area of Hida-Takayama, at the border between Gifu-ken and Nagano-ken, is especially attractive, with huge rotenburo (outside baths) facing the mountains. You can reach the towns of Shin-Hirayu or Shin-Hodaka in probably 1 hour and a half from Takayama, and there are buses, too. However, this area might not be accessible in winter.
