August is not so humid up here in Hokkaido. You can ask the kind people at this Facebook page about hiking here.

As several posts here have noted, there are a lot of great hikes, mostly in the mountains and (sometimes active!) volcanoes. I've been camping, hiking, and paddling around the Japanese archipelago for 20 years now, and I still haven't gotten to everywhere I want to explore - let alone get back to a few personal power spots I've uncovered in Hokkaido, here on main-island Honshu, and on other Japanese islands large and small.

I've posted an - updated - list with brief write-ups and pics of some of my favourite places to get out of doors in Japan at Wild Japan https://medium.com/the-big-sushi/wild-japan-an-explorers-guide-to-the-islands-mountains-forests-and-other-natural-settings-in-ae8c216934d0 if you want to see what I mean.

Whatever you do, try to stay in the mountains or go to Hokkaido.
The weather in July/August is not fit for humans in cities like Tokyo.
Unless you enjoy spending your time in aircon hotel rooms.
