WOW: Thank you, it worked for me too. But I cannot buy the ticket via this website, I go to the station.
Question: where does it say the departure station? I don't see a station on the search result.

The departure station name is just to the right of the time, in the copy I gave it is Tokyo as in Tokyo Station.
You can only buy tickets online a month in advance and the only way I know for people not living in Japan is to use a mobile app called SmartEX App.

Dear tsyuoi8:
I am learning a great deal about planning Japan travel. Could you tell me:

--I am thinking about buying tickets when I land in Japan on 4/5/19--I will need to buy tickets to:
1. 4/7/19: Nozomi train Tokyo-Kyoto
2. 4/17/19: Bullet train Tokyo-Kanazawa; Local train Kanazawa-Kagaonsen
3. 4/19/19 Kagaonsen-Kanazawa
4. 4/21/19: Kanazawa-Tokyo
5. 4/22/19: Tokyo Narita Express

Travel agents are "scaring me" by saying that all the trains (esp the Tokyo-Kanazawa-Kagaonsen) could be sold out. I will be purchasing these tickets two weeks in advance (likely 4/5 or 4/6/19). Do you think they could be sold out? Is this a very very popular route?

You mentioned in an earlier post that Kyoto trains are very frequent and that I could probably buy them the day before. Is this true? I do prefer reserved seating.

Finally, we will be carrying one wheelie/1 backpack...I don't think I need a green ticket, what do you think?

You seem to really understand the Japanese train system...thank you so much! I'm finding it's quite difficult to independently book accommodations without a travel agent, but I like to do it myself!

You don't need to buy any of these tickets in advance! Purchasing them 10 minutes before you plan on traveling will almost certainly be fine. You will certainly have no problem buying the tickets 2 weeks in advance.

Tokyo-Kanazawa is a Shinkansen train, where you can book reserved seats. You can also book a reserved seat on the Limited Express trains between Kanazawa and Kaga Onsen, if you like. In both cases, booking in advance will limit your flexibility on the day of travel. Those travel agents are lying to you: the trains are very unlikely to be sold out.

You're right, you don't need a green ticket.

Kaga Onsen is fairly close to Kyoto. Doing a loop trip Tokyo-Kanazawa-Kaga Onsen-Kyoto-Tokyo may well make the most sense for you. Kaga Onsen-Kyoto is covered by express trains with reserved seats, leaving roughly once an hour throughout the day. You could almost certainly get tickets on the day you wanted to travel, but could also book in advance if you preferred.

Thank you so much! Suffice to say I have really been getting the run-around.
But my language was confusing: I go to Kyoto for 11 days and must arrive on 4/7 (by 3pm); I get to Japan on 4/5. I believe you or another LP expert told me that would not be a problem, b/c so there are many trains Tokyo-Kyoto. Correct?
Then on 4/17 I am planning 4 nights in Kanazawa/Kagaonsen. It's roundabout to leave from Tokyo, but my group is returning to Tokyo from Kyoto and the hotel is paid for.
Also what do you think of the SmartEx App? Is it reliable and do they deliver the tix to the hotel or do they send a voucher? Does it work on Apple/Mac platforms?

So much appreciate your good wisdom and sense about this!!! Many thanks!

SmartEx, works on iPhone (and Android)
You pick up the tickets from a ticket machine at a major station.
The time I used it it reliable. Run by the train company JR central and not a travel agent

Also, I'd you are worried about Tokyo to Kanazawa. You should be able to book online via JR East web site. You do need to pick up the tickets from a major station at least one day in advance.
I used this service for bookings over the busy new years period and booked my tickets in advance before arrival in Japan. Picked the two days before travel

When can I book via the "JR East Web Site" and what is that url (website address)?
