Hi,
I realise there's been lots of discussion about the charges and methods for cash withdrawal etc, but wasn't able to find any info on whether Japanese ATMs are using 6-digit or 4-digit PIN for access?
thanks!

is ur ATM card issued by a JApanese bank, then you should follow the pin whether they are 4 or 6 digits. But if ur talking about international atm or credit card to be use in Japan ATM, i dont think, you will follow japan PIN no matter how many digits they are using, you should stick to your PIN no matter how many digits it is. If somebody answered u here , that Japan atm uses 4 digits, then ur atm at ur home country use 6 digits, are u trying to say , u omit the last two digits of ur PIN to follow JApan atm say 4 digits pins? it doesnt make sense.PINs are PINs, you cant change how many digit u want it to have, just to fit in somwhere else ATM, it will be a different story then.

My Japanese bank accounts all use 4 digits, I'm not sure how this will affect someone with a 6 digit number as even my US card has a 4 digit number that I use to withdraw cash from my US account.

>> Thanks, Steamero - i think i'll have to go check with my local bank if they can issue me a 4-digit PIN then. thanks!
>> Wanderer - sorry, I should have been clearer. I just wanted to know if my 6-digit PIN on my international ATM card would work on Japanese ATMs. Thanks.

okei...techinically speaking, a Japanese atm machine will not ask you to enter a 4 digit PIN if that macchine reads that ur atm is not a Japanese issued atm, it will jsut say, enter ur pin no. If the system honored ur international atm in the first place, then, I dont think it will reject ur atm just for the fact that ur atm uses a 6 digit PIN. I did this many time, I have an atm issued in Singapore which uses 6 numbers, and I didnt have problem withdrawing money in the USA even though it uses just 4 digits ( I just learned it now).I just couldnt imagine walking in ur local bank telling , hey I need you to change my PIN to 4 digit instead of the usual 6 digit since I will be travelling to Japan, it doesnt make sense even though Im not a bank employee.
