Greetings to everything this Year 30,

I am considering taking a weekend trip to the north of Kyoto-fu, one of the ever dwindling regions of Kansai which I've never been to. One of the main purposes of doing this trip in winter is to try and see some snow, which I like. Are any of you familiar with this region? I'd like some help.

Travel logistics mean that miles away the easiest way for me to make this trip is to take a bus from Kobe. The bus goes to Maizuru, so it would probably be more convenient for me to stay in Maizuru, rather than around Amanohashidate. Does anyone know of any cheap accommodation there? (I'll accept advice on cheap accommodation anywhere in the region, actually!)

Next: what to do? I think walking across Amanohashidate will take no more than an hour. What else is there to do in the whole area? My main interests are going to be historic/architectural sights of interest, pretty scenery, and snow. I'm prepared to do lots of hiking, if I can find nice places to hike. What areas are interesting? I figure a day in and around Amanohashidate, and the other day.....where exactly?

I've been to Fukuchiyama and Ayabe before. I'd like to dedicate this weekend to the three coastal "cities" of Kyoto-fu.

Many thanks!

I haven't been, but Yosano has some old houses and Ine has unique (for Japan?) architecture.

If you feel bored, you could also drop by at Tango Kokubunji or whatever is left of it (which is not much...).

Yeah, I saw the Tango Kokubun-ji there, I'll probably end up visiting: it's in a fairly convenient spot. The Ichinomiya is nearby as well, and looks rather interesting. (I visited the Kawachi Kokubun-ji yesterday, incidentally; basically nothing is left at all there, but it offers some nice views)

Thanks for the tips about Ine and Yosano! Ine looks kind of attractive, I might try and combine it with a day of wandering around Amanohashidate. I don't know how interesting Yosano's old houses are, but it's also home to a rail museum, which might be nice. Of course, the railway no longer exists, so who knows how you get there, but anyway.

All I need is a place to sleep.....

I can't help at all (yet). I've been to Amanohashidate twice, but both times was as a day trip on a long drive from Tottori (one of the most beautiful drives I've ever been on) and we just had enough time to see and walk across the spit and really not much else. However, I've got a student who is from that area, and when I see him today I'll ask him what he recommends.

Thanks moose!

I'd like to go this weekend, if I can find somewhere to stay. I've driven the whole coastal road (as much as it exists) between Tottori and Kinosaki Onsen, and I agree that the scenery is stunning.

So my student didn't show up today for his session. In any event, I'm looking forward to hearing back about your trip up to the coast - it's something I've been meaning to do for a while, I just have to wait until I can find some time to do so.

Okay, the weekend's starting to come together. One day exploring in and around Amanohashidate, and one day in Maizuru. I don't think I have time for Yosano, but what can you do.

Maizuru has some interesting history, and (hopefully!) some interesting museums. I will report back...
