Hi I am going from Koya-san to Miyajima in one day. What is the best way to get there? I am happy to get a taxi from Koya-san to the nearest train station if this helps.... any advice on cutting my journey time down would be great!

Thanks in advance

It's going to be a rough day. Koyasan is rather inaccessible, that is kind of the point.

Basically you'll want to get to Gokurakubashi to take a train to Hashimoto(or you can take a taxi further to there)
From Hashimoto you'll want to wait for one of the faster Nankai trains to Osaka Namba
From there youll subway or JR loop to ShinOsaka
Then the expensive Shinkansen ticket to Hiroshima.

Then transfer at Hiroshima to the local JR line to Miyajima
then ferry to the island.

If you hit it perfectly it will take about 5 hours.

No way to do it faster than that...even paying a fortune to do it by taxi!

The roads to/from Koyasan are very narrow, with endless twists through the mountains. A taxi down to Hashimoto station isn't going to be particularly fast, maybe even slower than the cable car/train (assuming it's running - Koyasan has had a lot of issues with train closures recently, and typhoon damage). And it's going to cost a fortune!

From Hashimoto, trains are definitely faster.

Either change your plans, or accept that it's going to be a long day from Koyasan to Miyajima, with lots of changes along the way. Koyasan is in a remote location, way up a mountain. Its remote location is in fact the raison d'etre for its existence. Try and enjoy what you can of that!

Thank you very much for the information, I will serve a lot in a future trip that I have planned to Japan and thought to visit that area.
