I will be in Japan a total of 28 days. Can I get two rails passes - say a 21 day and a 7 day - to cover all the days?

I believe the pass covers transportation to and from the Airport and Tokyo - true? Dows it cover any transportation in Tokyo? I plan to spend about 5 or 6 days in Tokyo, including various side trips, and the same for Kyoto. The rest of the time still to be determined traveling about. Any opinions regarding the trade off of having just the 21 day pass compared to a 21 and 7 day pass that would cover the entire time?

Oh yes, one more thing - the Green Pass compared to the Ordinary Pass. Are there a lot of advantages to the Green Pass, is it worth the extra cost?

All help and advice much appreciated,

Tom

Best choice would be to get a 21-day pass and only activate it for the day you leave Tokyo. Transport to Narita Airport starts at about Y 1,000 (Keisei Line non-reserved train) and transport to some of the sights is either cheap (Kamakura about Y 2,000 return) or better done with Railway Companies not covered by the pass (e.g. Tobu Railways to Nikko).

Check here for prices for individual tickets :

Hi

We had an ordinary 1 week railpass when we went to Japan a couple of years back. We first stayed in Tokyo and used the subway to get around (this is not covered by the railpass by the way) and after that we activated the railpass and used it to go to Nagoya, Kyoto, Hiroshima etc. I have posted a trip report with pictures and links on my homepage and I have written more details there. Maybe you can find some useful info there to start with. Get in touch if you have any questions.

is as it says; it covers ONLY JR=national TRAINS/railways and thus none of city metro/subway/whatever you call it, as I DK/never have been TTW, so cannot compare it, but assuming youre the ignorant USA; AmTrak also dont cover the NYC subway, or?
aghree with above: assume you stay only in TYO the few first days, buy only the 21 day and pay as go when there.
ALL subways also Offer 1-day passes (ichi nichi yosha ken) which may help you for that day, cost like 6/7/800 JPY or so

You can buy as many JR passes as you want, by the way.

Generally speaking, most folks don't find the green car pass worth the extra. It may have value if you are travelling during times when the trains are crowded since it opens up additional seats.

agree with #1. Otherwise the pass cover the JR trains inside Tokyo (such as the yamanote and the sobu line) but it is really not worth to "activate" it while you are in Tokyo. Trains inside Tokyo are really cheap (cheaper than subway and more interesting).

Ditto #1

No reason to get the Green ticket. Definitely only activate the ticket when leaving Tokyo. You can trade in your voucher at the airport (Narita, I assume) but date it to begin on your leaving day. Then you can start using the pass at any Japan Rail station within Tokyo.
