Hi,
At the end of September, I will be going to Tokyo on business for a few days = my company pays to get me there. Viva !!!

I would like to ask TT-ers if it is worth to stay on a few days in Japan. It seems an expensive but interesting country. Where would you suggest to go ? I don't mind travelling around, in other words, I am not limited to daytrips from Tokyo. I think I can extend the stay by about a week.

Please make your suggestions, I am really excited by this opportunty

Tnx,

Pawel

I really find it hard to understand when people ask the "is it worth it" questions most of the time. You sound excited about coming, or is it just excited about having airfare paid? If it's the former, what interests you about Japan? There is plenty to see and do, even in only a few days, so on that alone, yes, it is "worth it".

Expensive? It's as expensive as you make it. Stay in a 5-star hotel or a youth hostel. Remain within the city and use public transportation, or ride the buses and trains to remote parts of the country. Eat ramen and udon at stand-up shops, or dine at the finest restaurants in Ginza.

I agree with the "is it worth it" question. Too subjective. Some people think Disneyland is "worth it" and I think it is pure American schlock.

Anyhow, back to your question- YES! Come here and have a look around! How can a country with such a long history NOT have things to see and do?
Get a guidebook, and get some ideas of what interests you, then come back here and ask us for particulars!

A competitor to LP, but check the "suggested itineraries" here : www.frommers.com/destinations/japan

www.frommers.com/destinations/japan

You could start by looking at the LP destination guide. Japan destination guide.

If you plan to stay mostly in the Tokyo area and take day or overnight trips from there, I found the Rough Guide to be better than the LP Tokyo Guide but either way look at the guidebook updates section on the Tokyo Guide, I posted some information about the Nikko area.

The cost of spending a few days in Japan shouldn't be bad at all, probably roughly comparable to the US, especially considering good inexpensive fast food and 7-11 stores we can only dream of in the US .

One simple option would be to take a train to Kyoto, stay at one of the hotels near the station (which is a major shopping center) and use mass transit to get around the city. Gion district for sure, and as many temples as you care to see.

Or maybe go north--Tohoku has magificent scenery.

I would say go west young man - that is go to Kyoto. Take the shinkansen there and back and spend a few days there seeing the temples.
