hello again
the second part of my Japan trip will be in June, 8 to 25.
i have 17 days

i had been dreaming of Hokkaido but having only 7 days to go there and finding that accommodation and transportation seems pretty expensive there, i am starting to think of other options :)

the plan so far is tokyo - mt fuji - ecovillage close to mount fuji - hakone - zushi to see a friend - tokyo - nikko

i can definitely add a day in my schedule as an extra day visiting my friend
and can have an extra day at the ecovillage i am already visiting
can have 2 days more at Nikko - i'm pretty sure i'll enjoy that

what else would you recommend? i love hiking and love temples and monasteries that are alive.
i'm travelling on a low budget because i'm on a long trip all to expensive places.

OR would you go to Hokkaido anyway? :)

June will be showing the early signs of green up here in Hokkaido. It's a bigger place than most people estimate, so with only 7 days, I'd recommend focusing on a few locations which are not that far apart. Start by talking to the experienced campers and hikers at this Facebook site.

No more so than anywhere else in Japan. I don't know how you figured that. How were you planning to come up here? Fly (several airport choices) or bullet train to Hakodate?

Its a good place for hiking.A lot less so for temples (of course they exist there, but nothing like the most interesting ones on Honshu and the other main islands).

You can fly from Tokyo for about US$50-60 each way.No reason why accommodation there has to be more expensive than elsewhere in Japan....

Hokkaido has a lot of great hikes especially in the mountains, Sapporo is easy to reach from Tokyo, and there are lots of camping options around the island. Look at Daisetsuzan National Park, Lake Akan/Meakandake area, and Rishiri/Rebun islands as just some examples.

Then again, there are also lots of great hikes on main-island Honshu. Kamikochi is just one example of a mountgain resort area - with camping - in the Japan Alps.

I've posted a guide based on personal experience to some of the best trekking areas in Japan at Japan Wild

Thank you so much for the answers! Flight to Sapporo booked :) 7 days in Hokkaido, confirmed!
Not sure where to go. I’m looking for beautiful scenery where I can hike and have a quiet time :)
