My wife and I are planning a holiday to Hokkaido during the Easter break that is from April 13th to 28th. Our interests revolve around hiking, nature and photography. Is it a good time weather wise? Will it be too early for Sakura? Any suggestion of a 10 to 12 days itinerary as we intend to rent a car? Many thanks for your recommendations.

I live in Hokkaido. April will still have some snow on the ground in the lowlands (which means definitely in the higher altitudes, too). It's way too early for sakura (google it, the best time is in early to mid May). You will see no green on the leafy trees. Hiking will likely be a sloppy coolish mess, but ask for more details at this Facebook site.

Renting a car means you need an international drivers permit, paying highway fees (or crawling along secondary roads), and paying for insurance. You can use www.hyperdia.com to see how to get around with public transportation, if all that seems daunting (as well as potentially driving in patches of snow/ice).
