Boisterous people, great foodie culture, fab nightlife best sums it up for Osaka! You will have a great time there!

I've spent a fair bit of time in Osaka and #1 summed it up, I think it's a great place, but it does your head in after a while 'cause of all the cars and trucks and people. However, if I was going to live there for a year I'd want to be right in the thick of it, around Umeda or Namba or anywhere close enough to the city that you can still get a good feed at 4a.m. Buy a bicycle as soon as you're off the plane, it's one of the flattest cities around and basically you can ride all over the shop. Japanese will be shocked to hear that you rode to a place 5km's away, but it's such little effort and so interesting, it beats the bus or train anytime. I don't know what other cities in Japan are like, but Osaka's great...

#1 and 2 speak truth.

The Summer of Love is never ending in the Big O. Like #2 says, don't be a half-assed ninny - jump into the Blade Runner urban morass with both clodhoppin' feet!

If you want some cheap but potent beer make sure to find a 280 Bar where almost everything on the menu is 280 Yen (around $2.80 US when I was there). They also have some decent snacks...

also, because of its qualities, osaka is really a place to live, not to visit.

at first it does not have so many interesting sights but the sights are the people themselves. they are better than any other big city in japan. a year will give you plenty of time and opportunity to make friends with some locals.

next to buying a bicycle its probably the best thing to do. go out of your way to meet the locals, and you ll have a wonderful time!
