Hello,
I am currently in Takayams where I got lost trying to find my hotel. Someone was kind enough to go out her way to run around and help me find it.
I was kind of impressed by it and I am very grateful, although I couldn't express it very well in japanese.
Do you think it could be a good idea to buy a gift to repay her ? If yes, what kind would be suited ? (I am in Takayama so I am a bit limited)
Thank you

I don't think a gift is necessary, and might even embarrass her hopelessly. But if that's what you want to do anyway, I'd suggest something edible. I'm sure Takayama is full of nicely wrapped sweets and treats of various descriptions.
Yes, gift giving is an art in Japan. There's a risk she'd feel obligated to give you something in return. Instead, maybe just send a nice note of thanks when you return. On good stationery with careful handwriting, preferably with a fountain pen. And use a stamped envelope, not one with a meter sticker. Appearance is really important.
