Wondering if it's necessary to book these ferry tickets in advance, or can we rely on two foot passenger seats being available on arrival Friday morning?
Also, does anyone know what fees/taxes must be paid at the port leaving Japan? This for oir last day cash flow planning.

I suspect you'll be fine booking tickets last minute, but certainly can't guarantee that. I'm sure the port has a telephone number for enquiries; try and get a Japanese speaker to call and ask for you, would be my suggestion.

There shouldn't be any fees/taxes, except for those included in the price of the ticket.

I would also ask if it's okay to book a one-way ticket. When I traveled from Busan to Japan by ferry, I wasn't allowed to buy a one-way ticket without showing a flight ticket out of Japan. I'm not sure if there are similar rules in the opposite direction.
