Hello!

I'm planning a wedding anniversary trip to Japan at the end of April and would love some input on a suggested itinerary. Below is a rough sketch as to how we may divide our 9 day trip (which does not include international travel days on either end):

Tokyo - 2 nights
Hakone - 3 nights
Kyoto - 4 nights
Tokyo - 1 night

While we are interested in a bit of city buzz, we would primarily like to experience fresh air, hot springs, culture, food and vistas. Our general travel philosophy is to pick a few must-sees and allow for leisure time in between so that we do not feel too over-scheduled.

I've never been to Japan, so looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Does your trip involve Golden Week at all? (April 29-May 5, although you could extend that from April 27- May 6 with the weekends)If so I hope you have your accommodation already booked. I think your trip looks fine. Maybe a little too long in Hakone for me, but as you want to spend some time in the great outdoors it would be a nice base.

If your flights are not already booked, look at an open jaw flying out of Kansai Airport..that would save the backtracking to Tokyo.

Apart from that (and golden week if applicable)then I'd agree with moose that it looks fine.Quite a lot of time in Hakone relative to Tokyo, but if you want 'countryside',hot springs, nature that is not a bad choice.

As an alternative to Hakone you could also consider Nikko, which has culture, hot springs, fresh air, and wilder nature than Hakone.
