Just wondering whether this would work...
train from Tokyo to Odawara... pickup car...drive to Hakone (stay 2 nights)....drive to Kawaguchiko (or somewhere nearby) (stay 1 night)... drop off car Otsuki.
We would obviously pay a one-way car rental fee + we also need to hire 2 child seats.
1) Is this a sensible route? The reason we'd like a car is so that we can fit in a bit more (such as Fuji Safari park and other places) with a bit more flexibility and also to get a taste of driving in Japan.
2) do you think car companies would have child seats available to hire? I haven't had much luck searching car hire websites.
3) We are hoping to travel to Kyoto afterwards... what would be the best route?
Many thanks.

1) In the Hakone area, a car does not make much sense IMO, because part of the fun is to take different kinds of transport (ropeway, cable car, boat....) and public transport is frequent everywhere.
On the other hand, in Five Lakes a car can have some value and certainly for getting to the Safari Park.
I'd also check whether it makes sense to rent the car from/to Tokyo, instead of the one way rental (which tends to be expensive).
2) I would expect them to have child seats if you order them in advance. Did you check Japanese car hire companies? The big international companies are virtually non-existent in Japan.
3) In that case it would make sense to do the route in reverse since in Hakone you are closer to the shinkansen line for Kyoto (from Mishima/Atami or Odawara station).
I agree with bamse.Hakone is more fun by public transport...the cable cars, small trains etc.
Its also cheap from Tokyo with an all inclusive ticket....
