Planning Spring trip with 18 year-old granddaughter ,I have just read that Kyoto Imperial Palace is the only Kyoto Imperial Property she can visit because she is below age 20 . Is that age restriction unique or will it come up other places & times in Japan ? Thanks .
Not much, the two detached imperial villas in Kyoto, Katsura and Shugakuin, have a minimum age of 18. Visit to the Imperial Palace in Tokyo is allowed to under 18s accompanied by adult. Drinking and smoking is banned to under 20s but it's rarely enforced, especially if they are part of a family group.
There's no such restriction to all the major attractions I had been to in Tokyo and Kyoto. I was travelling with my 6 years old son, no problem at all.
