ok, i have just hit a fairly sizeable problem, i'm not sure why i did not look into this before. i have spent my morning looking at how to book my boat to Miyako-jima and i have realized that i can't....their website is all in japanese and when you phone them to book (i don't think that online booking is possible) they speak japanese and don't understand english. Also i have discovered that my plans on going to taiwan for a week or two in order to renew my japanese visa may not be so simple, Taiwanese immigration requires you to have a return ticket to proove that you will leave the country before your temporary visa expires, but you cannot buy such a ticket from Arimura. i am in a bit of a pickle.

what would the fourum's advice be? go to korea?

thanks.

What is the web site address?

Perhaps you could use the following program (rikai). Just type in the web address in the window just to the left of center at the top of the screen (its default is simply "http://"), then click GO on the right. Rikai will take you to the site, and you can get SOME idea of the English translation when you put the cursor over various characters (not all).

An alternative is to copy/paste the Japanese into the following web site translation software.
http://odn.excite.co.jp/world/text/

You paste into the left box, click the lower of 2 buttons (the one that says “ú¨‰p) to convert to Japanese, and then click the orange outlined box on top to get the English translation on the right. It's not perfect, but it might help.

Oh, if you can't read the kanji in my message above in parentheses, use the VIEW (V) menu and change the ENCODE (D) until you can.

An alternative is for you to go to a major travel agency such as JTB. They can book the boat tickets. And it sure is a lot easier to do thing kind of thing face-to-face when a language is an issue.

F3TO,

meant to include the same advice as Jacksan1! JTB (Japan Tourist Bureau) is also what my (Japanese) wife (works in the hotel industry) recommends

If you have a JR rail pass, just walk onto the JR boat like I did. No need to book. The JR part on the boat is in English.

Just noticed you are renewing a J Visa, so you probably aren't even eligible for a JRpass.

#6/7, I think that OP is referring to Miyako-jima, not Miyajima, the latter of which is accessible by the JR West ferry. But for Miyako-jima, JR does not service it. Again, any major travel agency such as JTB, Kintetsu, Nippon Travel can help with booking a ticket to Miyako-jima.

I've just checked their website, and their ferry serves Taiwan once a week. And if that does not work, you have an option of flying back on a one-way ticket.
