I lived in Southern Japan for over a year (on the Jet Program, teaching English over 25 years ag) and haven't been back since. I have the fortune of a free round trip ticket from the US to Tokyo for 12 days in late March to early April 2019.....So I booked it. Circumstances (at this point) have led me to plan this trip Solo and I was wondering if anyone had feeback for me traveling as a solo male of my age (53). It this going to be a rough trip? I am independent and like to explore, but also want to engage with others. I was thinking about either just getting an AirBnB in some vibrant city (other than Tokyo) and using it as a base, or heading North and exploring the parts of Japan I've never been to. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

If you are in a similar circumstance and looking for a Travel Partner in Japan, please let me know.

Japan is a pretty easy country to travel in. Why not come and spend 12 days here, if you can? Being solo shouldn't present any particular problems whatsoever. If you just want to hang out in one city for 12 days, Kyoto is an obvious choice, though there are certainly options as well.

I'm 56 and have done a dozen solo trips over the years, the last being in May of this year. Haven't had any problems getting around and have gone to some out of the way places in my time including Eastern Japan and Hokkaido.
I certainly never had a rough trip but these days I do choose to travel a bit more upmarket. I haven't had any experience with AirBnB as I prefer family run Ryokan myself

I agree, its not a tough country to travel in at all.No reason I can think of why it should be a 'rough trip'.And there are plenty of other solo travellers there, especially that time of year (be careful with accommodation, particularly if you choose a more popular tourist spot like Kyoto,or anywhere esle with famous cherry blossom).

Shouldnt be a rough trip. Japan is a lot easier to get around than it was 25 years ago, even if the physical dimensions of the cities have changed very little. There is much more english, IT, and services for foreigners. Plus you have been there before so little should really take you by surprise.

For company, try the travel companions forum, possible consider using a travel app like Couchsurfing's Hangout feature.
