2 questions about Mt Fuji | Japan - Lonely Planet Forum

I may find myself in Japan at the end of August/early September. If I go, I will try and climb Mt Fuji. Can I ask advice from anyone who knows the mountain.

1. I know the official climbing season ends on 31 August. Does that mean the mountain will be overcrowded if I go up overnight August 30/31, but very quiet if I wait until September1/2. From reading the LP guides, it sounds that way. But I'd welcome hearing the experience of someone on this board.

2. I will have a tent and would like to camp near the mountain and use that as my base. Does anyone know of a camping site near the mountain?

I went some years ago on the 30th which was a Monday and it was already very empty and some of the huts were closed. As September 1st is a Saturday, I would even expect more peope compared to Friday August 31st.
