Can anyone recommend a good book on recent history of shanghai?
I found Stella Dong's TextThe Rise and Fall of Decadent City 1848-1949 Has anyone read it?
I will be in Beijing, Nanjing, and small towns in Shanxi and Shandong in July and August, but have a two one-week blocks free to use. I've been to most of the places on the beaten track more than once. I've never been to Tibet, so it is tempting to try to go, but a week sounds short to me.
Of course this is the worst time in China, so I like the idea of being in places that are less sweltering than the places I am already planning to be.
Likewise, visiting places like Zhongdian seems like…
Thaks for all the lovely people who already helped and answered mu questions earlier. Just a couple more:
1. Anyone have more experiences over Victory hotel and Shamian hotel?
2. What would the prices per room be if we don't book in advance?
3. Is it customary to haggle over the hotel room price in china?
Thanks a bundle!

I'm going to Tibet in June via Beijing. I need to get either plain or train to Xining. What airlines fly this route besides air china?
How can I find out about trains?

Hi,
I live in Japan. I'm planning to take a 3-4 day trip to Shanghai ASAP, really need a break from work. I intend to buy the flight tickets at No1 travel.
Some questions:
· how/where can I find online a cheap place to stay? Especially, is there s/th equivalent to a Ryokan in Shanghai? I made the experience in Japan that cheap and ryokan is not a contradiction at all, and I have stayed at a few very nice ryokan for about 5000 Yen/night. Of course I am not looking for a japanese-style ryokan in…
Despite the security advantages to travellers cheques, the reality on the ground is that they can only be cashed at Bank of China or the larger (ie expensive) hotels if you are a guest there. This could leave you high & dry with a load of unusable money!
Hi everyone,
I'm looking forward to having Street Food for some meals while in Beijing, Xian, Wuhan and Shanghai. I do not want to eat bizarre foods but rather just normal kinds of things eaten by many westerners. Some of my questions are:
1. What are some of the best things that should not be missed?
2. What kinds of foods may not be safe to eat?
3. What kinds of foods can be counted on to be safe?
4. Is street food in China generally easy to identify so that you know what you are eating…
When we visited Thailand we really enjoyed the Chatuchak market in Bangkok, as well as the Night Market in ChiangMai....
We'll be pretty much on the beaten path in China.... which markets should we not miss?
Thx
Travelling to Hong Kong in a few weeks.
Can anyone suggest the best location to stay in Hong Kong with good central access to getting around for sites, shopping and going out at night.

I Tiger Leaping Gorge considered a "rural area" that warrants taking malaria meds to visit? I'll be hiking there in April 2007.
