Seeing marvelous water supplying systems which span to go to all of the fields equally from mountains---which were made only by human power spending over 700 years never stopping till today---is intereting (if people once abondon some fields with no water supplying, those fields will be back in just a mountain overgrown within only a year)

---for seeing it, it's rather better in the rain or just after stopping raining guided by local people(some guest house owner recruits participants for those tour in the rain for their guests---(i.e) Jucky's Guesthouse(水云间客栈⑨ in map below) in Duoyishu village(locates at the edge of terraced fields)---the owner(Hani minority) can speak fluent English and also guides to many places and local markets(opened by luner calender) in Yuanyang.
---Duoyishu village has very few eating spots but this small guesthouse(Jacky's Gh) has its own small restaurant and serves delicious menus & tasty coffee.

Hi,
We plan on travelling in Yunnan from 16th July to 2nd August. Seeing the rice terraces is one of my greatest wishes. Will it be spectacular at this time of year? Is there something called the Swirls? someone mentioned this to me.
Is this too much time to spend in Yunnan? I read that the rains can slow down travelling.
Would appreciate your ideas on developing our itinerary. We arrive and fly out of Shanghai.

Many thanks

>Is there something called the Swirls?
---That's right but it's not in July & August but at the time when all rice paddies have water and sharp outlines of ridges are showing geometrical wnderful patterns "Swirling" very clearly and it's from January to early April, not in July & August.

Thousands of rice paddies(big terraced fields in Yuanyang have 5,000~6,000 rice paddies each) make amazingly geometrical wonderful patterns and those geometric wonderful patterns are made by irrigated "water" which reflect brilliant sky and "sharp outlines" made by neumalous ridges of rice paddies " as if they are created by God-hands or Miracles from Heaven.

So "all rice fields equally have grown rice and shade off or blur sharp outlines of rice fields in monotone(green color only)" give us different impression from specutaclar Yuanyang terraced fields at the best time for viewing though rice fields are still very beautiful.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
>Will it be spectacular at this time of year(from 16th July to 2nd August)?
---strictly speaking, not so spectacular in July and August comparing with Yuanyang terraced fields at the best season as above (of course, for visitors)
---"from 16th July to 2nd August" is "maybe" too long("maybe" means that everyone has his own way of traveling and his own favorites and his own way of spending his time, so to be honest, i'll hesitate to say "it's too long!" or "too short!".
---but, generally speaking, it's too long because July & August are not the best season for visitors who expect "specutaclar" Yuanyang terraced fields.
So my suggestion is ---if you travel to Yunnan province in July & August anyhow, i suggest that you spend your time for Yuanyang 3~4 days, and a week in max , and spend other days for visiting other places in Yunnan province, and visit Yuanyang in another time one more when all rice paddies have "water"(Jan~Apr) . It's better and the best if you expect "specutaclar" Yuanyang.
But not that i stop you go to Yuanyang in that time and stay long because there are many ways of spending your time in Yuanyang not only for seeing terraced fields but also doing many other things.
(i.e.)
*walk around the Xinjie town or the village where you stay(maybe you can make yourself relax in this town which is riding on the back of the mountain and having a full view of surroundings).
*visit other villages and markets a bit far from your guesthouse(at Xinjie or a some village) ---checking on which days local markets will be held in accordance with Luner calender is required by asking it to local people or your guesthouse owner before going
---- it's avalable by local bus coming from other cities in Yunnan along Red river(=Mekong river).
(i.e.) local bus coming from Gejiu city(个旧), Kaiyuan city(开远), Mengzi city(蒙自), Jianshui city(建水)and going to Luchung(緑水), Ganiang(嘎娘) etc via Xinjie (=Xinjie bus station) so if you use these local bus or shared minibus(or minivan) from Xinjie bus station, you can visit remote villages and towns.
---if you go to those places by local bus coming from above cities , you may need to stay one overnight at those remote places because you may not be able to get any return bus on the same day.
---but if you use shared minibus or minivan which departs from Xinjie bus station in the morning, it's possible to return to Xinjie on the same day(=go & back within a day).
---my handmade map of Yuanyang(showing distances from Xinjie)
①Visiting Xinjie town or near Xinjie
*"Xinjie town" and market
*"Shengcun"(胜村)town and market---a local township between Bada and Duoyishu
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
②Visiting villages and markets a bit far from Xinjie
*"Ganiang"(嘎娘) village---(53km south-east of Xinjie-- you can see panoramic alpine scenes like villages in Switzerland on the way to Ganiang as if you are traveling Swiss or French Alps seeing beautiful villages on the slope of moutains though it's in China!)

*"Shalatuo"(沙拉扽)village & market---(38km south-west of Xinjie)

*"Niujiaozhai"(牛角寨)village & market---(28km west of Xinjie)

*"Laomeng"(老勐) market---(54km south of Xinjie)

etc

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
③walking or hiking seeing terraced fields
*hiking---Xinjie→Jinzhuzhai(金竹寨)→Longshuba(龙树坝)→Xinjie(3.5~4 h)
*walking---Duoyishu to Laohuzui via Puduo & Dongbu & Duosha village(14.1km)
*walking among rice fields(with guide=guesthouse owner if it's possible & rainy day is rather better)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PS) In my country=Japan, there also remains many terraced rice fields.
http://www5f.biglobe.ne.jp/syake-assi/newpage764.html
(Best 100 terraced rice fields in Japan)

Terraced fields in my country are not so big comparing with the ones in China and Vietnam because many big terraced fields in my country had alreay disappeared so the biggest terraced fields(=one site) in my country now has around 50~1,340(max) rice paddies but some terraced fields are facing the sea so look like such as juming or diving into the sea--#52 .

To the contrary, a famous big terraced fields in Yuanyang(=one site only) has 5,000~6,000 rice paddies and those neumerous rice paddies are making geometric wonderful patterns Swirlings and look like such as rising to Heaven or rising dragons, or falling to the bottom of valley breaking through the clouds--- it's really beautiful and "spectacular"!

So if your image of Yuanyang terraced fields is "spectacular", you need to visit Yuanyang at the best time to see it(Jan ~early Apr)!

In response to #12

Thank you jp_geckozy for your in depth answer. I think we will have to travel in Yunnan next year in March to capture the spectacular 'swirls'.
Back to the drawing board of deciding where to travel from Shanghai that is interesting and not too expensive transportwise.

>where to travel from Shanghai that is interesting and not too expensive transportwise

--- the places i can show you around/near Shanghai are quite limited number(Hangzhou pnly) though i traveled China(+Vietnam+Laos in one time) many times and i know a lot about Yunnan & western Sichuan & Vietnam & laos and my entry & exit point in China was, every time, Shanghai.

So other one will help you.

Well, i don't know whether your entry point in China next years is also Shanghai but i'll write about transports from Shanghai to Yunnan(Kunming, Yuanyang , northern Yunnan etc).

■as for transports from Shanghai to Yunnan
①Flight from Shangahi to Kunming takes about 3.5 hours
②Sleeper train which directly goes to Kunming from Shanghai takes 34~44 hours(2 nights in a train)
③High speed train=bullet train takes about 11 hours only from Shanghai to Kunming(Jan.2017, new line between Shanghai and Kunming started).
④Sleeper train from Shanghai to Nanning(about 34 hours=one nigh in a train) or high speed train=bullet train(11h40m) + sleeper bus from Nanning to Hekou(CN & VN border near Sapa in Vietnam)/about 14 hours then take a local bus from Hekou to Yuanyang(Xinjie)/7~8 hours or (A)take a train from Hekou to Kunming/about 6 hours(B)take a highway bus from Hekou to Kunming/about 5.5~6 hours then go to Yuanyang by daybus/about 7 hours, by sleeper bus/about 11 hours--"11h" is time adjusting to avoid arriving xinjie with "too early time in the morning".

about LOCAL MARKETS in YUANYANG (again)

http://www.yunnanadventure.com/show/Markets-Days-around-Yuanyang_42017.html
---about market days in Yuanyang

https://www.flickr.com/photos/93515541@N04/34847724640/in/dateposted-public/ ---Yuanyang map again and "Laomen" is 54 km south of Xinjie/about 2 hrs by local bus, minibus, shared minivan etc from Xinjie town

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to visit a local market while you are in Yuanyang, it's difficult for foreign visitors(also Chinese visitors too) to accurately determine the dates and catch it because some markets will be held every a week with Luner Calender, some markets will be held every 5 days and many local markets will be held shifting dates except few big markets (i.e.) Laomeng market which will be held on every Sunday.
http://www.yunnanadventure.com/Markets/Laomeng-Market-in-Jinping-County,Honghe_4.html
Well, local markets in Yuanyang(not in Yuanyang county but in Yuanyang "area") where we foreign visitors can easily(=with no difficulty to get transport) visit by local bus or shared minibus(minivan) are as below(not all)---
*Xinjie(新街)market---Xinjie town
*Nansha(南沙)market----30 km from Xinjie town located at the entrance of Yuanyang terraced fields
*Shengcun(胜村) market---a local big township, 20 km from Xinjie town=on the way to Duoyishu village
*Shalatuo"(沙拉扽)market---38 km west of Xinjie town(1.5 hrs by local bus)
*Neujiaozhai"(牛角寨)market---28 km west of Xinjie town(1 hr by local bus)
*Panzhihua(攀枝花)market---24km south of Xinjie town=6 km south of Laohuzui"(老虎嘴)terraced fields
*Laomeng"(老勐) market---54 km south of Xinjie town(the biggest local market in Yuanyang, 6 minorities are gethering here on every market day). Laomeng market is very interesting but around Laomeng(town), there are many "banana" fields or plantations more than rice fields because Laomeng is situated at low altitude down from high altitude points(Xinjie etc).
*Ganiang(嘎娘) market---54 km south of Xinjie town=30km east of Duoyishu village(about 2 hrs by local bus from Xinjie---almost no tourists every time!
All avove villages & towns have hotels and guesthouses aside of many(Laomeng etc) or not many(Ganiang etc), so if you stay a night there, you can enjoy local village and market slowly but if you want to return to Xinjie, Duoyishu etc in a day, you need to check return bus(minivan etc) just after arriving those market places.
